What Volunteers Mean to Hospice

The Hospice Doves, the volunteer 'staff' for Hospice of Rockingham County (HRC), are very special people - the very heart and hands of HRC.  Without our loyal corps of volunteers, Hospice of Rockingham  County literally would cease to operate because in order to be Medicare certified, a certain percentage of patient care has to be provided on a volunteer basis.  But putting financial aspects aside, The Doves help keep HRC running like a well-oiled machine.

As integral parts of the Hospice team, volunteers enable patients with a limited life expectancy to continue to live life to the fullest - either directly or indirectly.  Different types of volunteers are essential to the existence of Hospice.  Whatever your talent or skills, Hospice can use your abilities.  If you have a couple of hours or more a week available, consider becoming a Hospice volunteer.

Below is a sampling of the various types of volunteer opportunities available at HRC:

A Patient Care Volunteer May

bulletRead to patients
bulletRun errands
bulletHelp with meals
bulletHelp around the patient's house
bulletRelieve caregiver to run errands
bulletOffer emotional support to the patient or caregiver

An Office Volunteer Might

bulletAnswer the phone
bulletAssist with bulk mailings
bulletHelp with some light typing, copying, or filing

Our Special Events Volunteers Sometimes

bulletAssist with fund-raising events
bulletWork in our informational display booth at local festivals or health fairs

A Bereavement Volunteer Might

bulletProvide support to family after patient's death
bulletRun errands for a family member
bulletAssist with grief support group meetings

Volunteer Training

All HRC volunteers are required to take volunteer training classes.  Training classes are offered on a quarterly basis at the Hospice office.  Please see our class schedule under the Upcoming Events tab.

Topics include:

bulletIntroduction to the Hospice philosophy
bulletPatients and terminal illness
bulletCommunications and listening
bulletPsycho-social aspects of terminal illness
bulletGrief and bereavement.

Classes are offered free of charge and HRC provides all materials.  There is no obligation to HRC to become a volunteer after training.  If someone decides that Hospice volunteering just is not for them, HRC certainly respects that decision.

If your group or club has 10 or more members interested in taking volunteer training classes, rather than your group having to travel to our Hospice office, HRC will offer training classes at your preferred location.

Contact Us

Hospice always needs volunteers, especially those available during the day, and male volunteers are always in very short supply.

If you are interested in volunteering, please call Barbara Moore, Manager of Volunteer Services at 427-9026 ext. 402, or you may email her at bmhospice@triadbiz.rr.com.

Volunteer Meetings

Volunteer meetings are held at the hospice office on the 3rd Tuesday of each month.  These meetings are for our active volunteer roster.
